The Great Glen Way is Scotland's fourth National Long Distance Walking Route. It runs from Fort William at the northern end of the West Highland Way to the City of Inverness along the Great Glen Fault. The route is 73 miles (118 Km) in length following closely the line of the Caledonian Canal.
The walk starts from the side of Loch Linnhe, a sea loch that opens out onto the Atlantic Ocean. It follows the line of the Caledonian canal for almost all the way, this canal opening out into Loch Lochy, then Loch Oich prior to the much longer Loch Ness. The way departs to the west of Loch Ness shortly after Drumnadrochit and takes a moor and farmland route before finally crossing the Caledonian Canal and the River Ness as the walk enters the City of Inverness. At this point neither the canal or river have more than two miles to run before they enter the sea at the Moray Firth and then onwards to the North Sea.
